Mom – chef, seamstress, chauffeur, nurse, teacher…the lists of things that Mom does is seemingly never ending, and yet some manage all that and more. Those extra special moms who go above and beyond to not only take care of their own families but make a difference in the life of others deserve to be recognized for all their hard work. This year to recognize how much those extra special Moms contribute to their families and community Walmart had launched a new annual initiative – The Mom of the Year Award. After what I am sure was much difficult deliberation they have chosen 8 amazing finalists.
All 8 of the stories are touching and deserving of this award. I would not want to be on the panel that has to choose between the 8 finalists, stories like Katie Schulz’s who not only cares for and teaches her daughter how to live with Cystic Fibrosis, but also tirelessly raises awareness and funds for CF research. Being a mom is exhausting, but add in a special needs child plus fundraising and in my eyes you are a super mom! Then there is Olivine Bernatchez who in her 84 years of life has raised a family and contributed in innumerable ways to her small community in Gaspe with hot meals, fundraising and more. A Mom like her becomes a Mom to everyone who has been touched by her generosity and spirit.
I suggest reading through all 8 stories with Kleenex in hand. They are a great reminder of what we can accomplish at home and in our communities and why it’s so very important. Seven of the eight finalists will receive $10,000 for themselves plus $10,000 for the charity of their choice. Plus in a few short weeks, at the end of September, the Mom of the Year winner will be announced at a special gala event in Toronto. The Mom of the Year will also receive $10,00 plus her charity will receive $100,000! What an amazing way to honor Mom! If you know a special mom who makes a difference, watch for this great campaign in 2013 to open again for new nominations!
