After having 5 kids I know a bit about what you need when you are expecting. With our first daughter we went all out and decorated her nursery in a classic Winnie the Pooh theme. I invested in matching bedding, wallpaper border, carpets, and lamps. I went shopping with my Oma to pick out the perfect crib, dresser, rocking chair and bedding set and then for the first 6 months the nursery sat empty and the chair got moved to the living room because I made the decision to co sleep. The only thing we ever used with regularity was the stroller/car seat combo, a Moses Basket that stood beside my bed, the dresser which we converted into a change table and the Snugli.
Below are the 5 things that you need when you bring baby home.
#1 Change Table with lots of storage – It’s something that I didn’t have until my 4th baby, but proved invaluable. It’s amazing how many lotions, potions and diapers you need to have on hand, not to mention onsies, and having a place that keeps everything in arms reach is a must!
#2 Bassinet or Moses basket – When my little ones first came home from the hospital the first place they slept was in a Moses basket that was right next to my bed. During nap times and on those occasions when not co-sleeping the bassinet provided a cozy nest for my little bundle. If you want something that will be useful past the 3 month mark than a Pack and Play is a wonderful alternative and can be used when travelling or visiting family as well.
#3 Glider with Ottoman – This one should probably be #1 on the list, because it’s something that will prove useful for a long time and on a daily basis. Invest in a good one with plenty of cushioning because you will be nursing (or bottle feeding), snuggling , rocking to sleep, soothing, possibly snoozing, and reading in that chair with your wee one more than you realize.
#4 A Good Stroller - This one is important too. You will want to go out with baby, actually you will need to go out with baby for your sanity and theirs. A walk around the block or through the mall is a great way to get active and feel a sense of ahh. If your little one is like mine then you might even get a few minutes peace, because a stroll never failed to send my little ones to dreamland. Plus you will have diaper bags and car seats and you will need a safe place to transport your wee one and all their stuff. I still suggest having a Snugli, because when the stroller was full of my shopping purchases I still was able to have my baby safe and comfy and have my hands free.
#5 A swing or Rocker – Your arms are going to need a break, I guarantee it. When you need to put your wee one down to shower or cook meals or even to sneak in 5 minutes of Facebook a good seat for baby is a must. Not only will you need a break, but sometimes baby will too. I have had both swings and rockers and they are equally as good. You may find your little one prefers one over the other. My 3 girls loved their swings, but my son needed the vibrations of the Fisher Price Infant to Toddler Rocker.
You may have noticed I left car seat off this list and that’s because you need it well before baby comes home. Spend some time finding one that fits your vehicle then take some time getting to know it and having it properly installed by a professional. I’m not a fan of bucket seats simply because too often babies spend far too much time in them. Leave the car seat in the car and carry your baby either in the stroller or baby carrier.
