Cooking with Kids



I love cooking with my kids and feel it’s such an integral part of growing up. Licking spoons and trying new foods are special times. I hope by getting them involved in meal choices, preparation and baking fun that I pass on a love of cooking. Of course having somewhere that you can find easy recipes always helps. That’s why I like the new General Mills site, Life Made Delicious, so much. Not only do they have easy recipes for those crazy busy days as a mom to many, they also have great recipes for kids, perfect for getting little hands involved!


This weekend I decided to get the little, and not so little ones, involved in some Easter baking. I wanted to try my hand at sugar cookies again even though my last few attempts have been abysmal failures, and being just post tummy bug I wanted something super easy. With Betty Crocker, and some fantastic twitter friends lending a hand things went surprisingly well and the results were much better then anticipated. I’m sticking with Betty from now on.


The wee ones had a blast helping pour ingredients, cut out cookies and get all the little bits in a pile for me to roll out again. I find when cooking with kids it’s easiest to have each ingredient ready in small bowls. It speeds things up and keeps the jitter bugs at bay. We all know attention spans are short and kids are easily distracted, especially the younger ones.


For decorating the cookies I ended up going with an egg free version of royal icing since my boy is allergic. It was super easy, worked out well and tasted great. Add in a few sprinkles and left over treats and my kids were buzzing the rest of the day.

Sugar cookies icing recipe

1 cup confectioner’s sugar
2 tbsp milk
2 tbsp light corn syrup (I used golden which is fine as long as you are adding color)
1/4 tsp almond extract (optional) (I used vanilla)
food colouring as desired

In a small bowl, stir together confectioner’s sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing too thick, add more corn syrup. If it’s too thin, add more sugar. Divide into separate bowls, and add food coloring to each. Use spoon or candy making squeeze bottles to apply icing. I like the bottles because they make nice lines and area super easy for kids to manipulate.
